- NICOLE LAWTON

SAMOAN police have charged three men over the death of former Auckland student Jeremiah Malaki Tauili’ili.

Tauili’ili, who was known as Malaki, died on Wednesday after an incident outside a nightclub during the early hours of Saturday.

A family spokeswoman said he was rushed to Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital after he was ‘‘beaten up’’ by several people outside a nightclub in Apia’s marina. He was found by staff from the Edge Marina View bar and restaurant, who heard but didn’t see the incident.

The family spokeswoman said ‘‘he was bleeding into the brain over the weekend, all his organs had failed and he passed away Wednesday morning.’’

Police did not say what charges the men were facing.

Tauili’ili was born in Samoa and moved to Auckland to study engineering at AUT on a Foreign Affairs Ministry and Trade NZ AID Scholarship. He moved back to Samoa in 2017 and took a job as a civil engineer for the Samoan government. He had a partner and a son.
