Three­men ar­rested in Samoa af­ter death of ex-Auck­land stu­dent


SAMOAN po­lice have charged three men over the death of for­mer Auck­land stu­dent Jeremiah Malaki Tauili’ili.

Tauili’ili, who was known as Malaki, died on Wed­nes­day af­ter an in­ci­dent out­side a night­club dur­ing the early hours of Satur­day.

A fam­ily spokes­woman said he was rushed to Tupua Ta­masese Meaole Hos­pi­tal af­ter he was ‘‘beaten up’’ by sev­eral peo­ple out­side a night­club in Apia’s ma­rina. He was found by staff from the Edge Ma­rina View bar and res­tau­rant, who heard but didn’t see the in­ci­dent.

The fam­ily spokes­woman said ‘‘he was bleed­ing into the brain over the week­end, all his or­gans had failed and he passed away Wed­nes­day morn­ing.’’

Po­lice did not say what charges the men were fac­ing.

Tauili’ili was born in Samoa and moved to Auck­land to study en­gi­neer­ing at AUT on a For­eign Af­fairs Min­istry and Trade NZ AID Schol­ar­ship. He moved back to Samoa in 2017 and took a job as a civil engi­neer for the Samoan gov­ern­ment. He had a part­ner and a son.
