have been, you only need to know that his long-time teammate Tim Southee averages 60.93 in 20 matches against them, compared with 33.86 in his career overall.
Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson are the other players in the current Black Caps squad to have played Australia at least 14 times.
Guptill’s batting average against them sits at 32.03 from 27 matches, almost 10 runs down from his career mark of 41.79, while Williamson’s is 38.35 from 16 matches — solid, but almost nine runs down from his career mark of 47.13.
The Black Caps know they’ve been right in the hunt this week, reducing Australia to 45-5 chasing 233 in match one and 54-5 and 117-8 batting first in match two, but they also know they need to follow Boult’s example and lift to get over the line after two dispiriting defeats.
Today’s match is currently the last scheduled ODI between
New Zealand and Australia until at least late 2027, though they could still meet at next year’s World Cup in India and the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan. That means it could be the last for a number of the older Caps, including Boult, and that the trophy is set to reside in Australia for the next five years.
