Frozen Georgie Pie from 2020 sells for $45

- Ryan Anderson

Having sat at the back of the freezer for four years, a Georgie Pie has sold for $45 at a TradeMe auction - where the reserve was set for $1.

Isaac Broome, 41, was cleaning out his freezer when he came across the edible memorabilia of his childhood - a Steak Mince and Cheese Georgie Pie.

Broome picked up the “Kiwi icon” when McDonald’s announced they were discontinuing the pies, for the second time, in 2020.

Having put the pie up for sale, because he is gluten intolerant and couldn’t enjoy it himself, he is now $45 richer.

“It sold for 10x what I brought it - so I’m pretty good.”

The lucky buyer would be picking it up in a few days, but Broome was unsure whether they planned to eat it, or store it away as a piece of history.

Asked whether he reckoned the pie was edible, Broome said if he wasn’t gluten intolerant he would “give it a go”.

A bit of time in the microwave or the oven and it would be good to eat, he said.

The $45 would be going towards spending money for a South Island road trip in a classic Jaguar.

Broome said he could still remember when his school got to do the pōwhiri for the opening of the Georgie Pie factory in his home town.

Afterwards the kids were all given a free pie, where he scored a blackberry and apple one.

The Trade Me listing marked in “new” condition had gained a lot of traction with almost 400 people adding it to their watch list on Friday afternoon.

“Calling all Georgie Pie lovers! One of the last Georgie Pies from the last week that they were being sold by McDonalds. This has been in my freezer since then.

“Rare opportunity to get your hands on one of these classic steak mince and cheese pies one last time. $1 reserve, this cool auction closes lunch time Saturday!” the listing read.

Georgie Pie first opened in 1977 as their own food chain, the brainchild of Tom Ah Chee, before McDonald's bought the pie chain in 1996 and acquired their store locations.

The auction closed yesterday at midday.
