SANDY-LEE BELL, and OTIS and KARA DODSON
Events coordinator, student, and owner of Tuatara Design Store & Gallery. Live in Parua Bay, Whangarei Kara: Our main window looks out to Mount Manaia. At solstice or summer equinox, the sun rises straight over the mountain, which is quite amazing. Every day we wake up and go, “Wow, look where we live”, and that’s a great start to the day.
This space is in between our kitchen and lounge. It gets used for all sorts of things. The sewing machine gets brought out to the table and so do our little art projects, but we kind of tend to leave work at work.
People always say less is more but we’re kind of ‘more is more’ people. We’re hunters and gatherers really. There’s the ponga vase collection, which we get from op shops for only about one or two dollars each. They’re so beautiful and people just throw them away.
Having a gallery, it’s hard not to collect art. The piece behind me is by Victor Tukuafu. He’s a Tongan Maori artist from up this way. As soon as I saw that painting at an exhibition opening I had to have it. It just had to come and live with us at our house.
