Relaxed tailoring, fluid fabrics and flowy silhouettes – the pants-as-skirt trend is back for spring.

Sunday Star-Times - Sunday Magazine - - LIFE & STYLE -

or any fashion fan who has been around the block a few times – and put a few looks to bed – a list of summer’s more outré trends might cause concern: tapered jeans, therapeutic looking sandals and, the most maligned of all, culottes.

Like it or not, huge trousers are back, and culottes take up a good slice of the styles on offer. Overseas they’ve been adopted by designers and the fashion community with aplomb, while here there are a smattering of full-length styles available, and plenty that end around the knee. A quick round of applause for shorts that require more than a few inches of fabric, please.

Culottes’ bad rap as mumsy and unflattering is undeserved: in reality they suit lots of body types. Styles that have a streamlined top half and flowing leg are more flattering than a three-quarterlength skirt.

Counteract their fullness with a trim shirt, sweater or a tee. For full cropped styles, a heel will fight off the frump, while to pull off floorlength flowing styles you could channel a 70s vibe with a tank top, flat sandals and a whopping pair of earrings.
