Shane Hansen, an artist, hosts a new show about design that starts on TVNZ next month. He lives on the Tutukaka Coast with his wife Kirsty, a consultant, and their two sons Nikau, 10, and Mikaia, 7. SHANE/ As soon as we saw this house there was an excitement, but also this nice peaceful feeling that this is where we are meant to be.

I describe it to people as looking like a big corrugated iron block sitting out in the bush. It’s almost like a massive bush shed.

We’ve been here just over two years. We’ve got a hectare of native bush and it looks right through to the beach. You see all the boats coming out, the lighthouse...

I grew up in Auckland. I don’t miss it at all. We just got caught up in the negative stuff, the traffic and the stress. Now I can go there for a weekend and feel like a tourist and enjoy it.

The environment here is so inspirational; but sometimes I feel like the light is so good that instead of painting it, I want to be out in it.

This space is like a big airy entryway into the house. I like to sit here and play my guitar. I change the art on this wall all the time. It’s kind of like my gallery where I hang my new works so I can think about them.

The painting with the boy is called Home Sweet Home. It sort of uses the look of 60s illustrations from children’s books and it’s about about me reconnecting with a culture that I wasn’t brought up with. There’s still a long way to go. I’m taking it step by step.

The other one is Te Tui Rua. The tui is almost like my guardian bird, he’s in a lot of my works. He exemplifies what I’d like to be: strong, does his own thing. Shane is the host of Design Junkies which premieres on TVNZ 1 early next month.
