HARRY SAYS…

Celebrate a necessary breakup with some beauty goodies.

Sunday Star-Times - Sunday Magazine - - BEAUTY, HARRIET PUDNEY -

It’s been years since I’ve had a terrible boyfriend, but there was a time when I was absolutely addicted to them. Unreliable, condescending, and quick to anger? Sign me up.

So while it’s been a while since I’ve felt the combination of stress, hurt feelings and sweet relief that comes from ending a bad relationship, I remember it well. Suddenly your time is your own again and no one is taking up space in your home, being a pain. Sure it’s sad too, but for the most part the mood is that one picture of Nicole Kidman leaving her lawyer’s office after divorcing Tom Cruise. Sweet freedom.

If this is your current situation, first of all, congratulations. That can’t have been easy, but I’m almost 100 per cent certain you’ve made the right call. It is literally always better to be single than tied to someone who doesn’t have your best interests at heart.

Secondly, have you considered treating yourself? Don’t go too wild – you don’t need credit card debt on top of your current expenses – but getting a luxury moisturiser or that one lipstick you’ve had your eye on might feel pretty great. Especially when there’s now no chance someone will make you feel guilty about spending your own money.

You might be interested in the new Urban Decay Naked Cherry Eyeshadow Palette, $91. This ever-popular series of palettes has strayed a long way from its initial nude-shadows territory and the latest edition is a winner. If you’re ready for rosy, shimmery eye looks, step this way. The 12 shades are endlessly adaptable, and there are enough mattes in there to make the whole lot very usable. A delight.

A little more affordable but just as lovely to use is Lush’s Full of Grace solid serum bar, $20. Made with calamine powder and portobello mushrooms (apparently they’re protective and nourishing on skin- who knew?) it’s exactly the thing to massage into your face and neck before climbing into your gloriously spacious bed. Alternatively, go luxe with Drunk Elephant’s Lala Retro Whipped Cream, $95. Its blend of African oils and fermented green tea is beautiful on dry skin.

Last up, I’ve got to recommend a fancy shower gel, since you know your now-ex won’t use it all. Dr Hauschka Lavender Sandalwood Calming Body Wash, $30, smells divine and is super gentle. Winner.
