Sunday Star-Times - Sunday Magazine - - FASHION, KARLYA SMITH -

The dream summer day, for me at least, starts with a sleep-in, moves through to coffee and a book in the sun, then on to the beach. Some time in the mid to late afternoon there’s a shift to the pub, and since this is a dream day, your hair has dried beautifully from the sea water and all you need to feel ready for an evening out is a bit of lipstick.

Some colours and textures are particularly easy to wear under these circumstances, so I’ve rounded up a few of the best. Your mileage may vary – our preferences are our own – but to my mind, these are the lipsticks to keep in your bag through the warmer months. They’ll go perfectly with the slip dress you’ve put on over your now-dry togs.

If you’ve used any Bobbi Brown lipsticks before, you won’t be shocked to hear that the brand’s Crushed Lip Colours, $54, are excellent. Hydrating and comfortable to wear, they have a low-key, worn-in finish that makes them ideal for wearing without much other makeup. The shade Cabana is a muted coral that will brighten your whole face and it’s also lovely worn as a blush. My one issue is that it doesn’t come with an ice bucket of champagne, as the name suggests it maybe should.

Equally easy to wear is the MAC classic Twig, and even more beach-bag friendly is the fact that it comes in a mini size for $22. It’s a soft, browny pink that will suit you perfectly if you’re not huge on coral shades like the one above. I’m yet to meet an RMS Beauty product I didn’t get along well with, and its Wild With Desire lipstick in the shade Firestarter, $44, is the latest. It’s a smooth, lightly sheeny orange-red that will make you feel like ordering a gin and tonic. The one to go for when you want to up the ante somewhat.

Along those same lines but at a more attractive $30 price point is the Revlon Ultra HD Gel Lipstick in Adobe. The formula is midway between a lipstick and a gloss, and the chilli, brick red colour is particularly lovely on darker skin tones. Like the RMS option, it’s a winner for when you want to bring a bit of drama to your post-beach look.
