PARENTING:

Welcome to our bumper 56-page edition of Escape. This week we’re offering up a world of destinations, along with a rundown on the best prices and deals for earlybird airfares to Europe and the UK. A word of warning though – don’t wait for Santa to get it sorted, many of these deals are available for only a very limited time. To tempt you, you’ll find stories on Paris and Italy in our travel pages.

In Culture, we feature Boardwalk Empire, the TV series that returns for its third series this week. It might not be the easiest programme to watch but it’s always worth watching if you know what I mean. We also have broadcaster and NZ natural history enthusiast Graeme Hill writing on the 19th century New Zealand ornithological classic Buller’s Birds, which has just been re-released as a complete, allnew edition. We also have one copy of this amazing book to give away. Turn to page 38 for details.

And if you’ve been following our food writer Laura Faire, you’ll know she’s been expecting her first child. Her beautiful daughter Rosamund duly arrived earlier this month.

Thankfully there is no disruption to regular service. Laura, being the incredibly organised woman she is, filed plenty of columns in advance. She will clearly make an excellent mother.
