Q. I am a professional, modern 50-something woman wishing to travel alone for three weeks overseas. What countries would be suitable and are there any women’s groups I could join for a week or two not wishing to go with the senior citizen crowd just yet. I love dancing, wine and food but looking for a different culture.

A. Europe is ideal for indulging your interests while being immersed in a different culture. Travelling alone can have its own rewards. Central Europe, the UK and Mediterranean countries are all perfectly safe and many in your age group do experience these countries alone. France, Italy and Spain should be top of anyone’s list especially from a food and wine point of view. I suggest investigating small group touring which is an excellent way to get around, with a maximum of 16-20 people. Some small group tours are quite active, involving walking and cycling, but others are geared more to cultural aspects. Many will visit small villages, dine with locals and even get into the local nightlife. In the cities, maybe take a guided walk or even a cycling tour as an alternative to a coach tour. We also highly recommend Hop On Hop Off tours as these too give you a greater degree of independence. House of Travel can put together a tailor-made itinerary which could include experiencing flamenco in Seville or riding a Vespa through the Chianti hills.
