Black Sticks triumph

-

The New Zealand’s men’s hockey team remains undefeated in their pool in Glasgow after beating Trinidad and Tobago 8-0 last night. Nick Haig and Shay Neal scored doubles as the Black Sticks racked up four goals apiece in each half. Veteran skipper Phil Burrows opened the scoring before Haig bagged a double from penalty corners that was split by a spectacular individual goal from Neal who injured his left shoulder in the process. Simon Child kept the scoreboard ticking in the second half before Hugo Inglis and Alex Shaw added goals. It was then left to Shay, back on the field, to score his second goal and complete a lop-sided scoreline which will help New Zealand’s points differential, a potentially important factor. The Black Sticks’ next pool match is against England. Meanwhile, the women’s Black Sticks annihilated Trinidad and Tobago 14-0 in their opening pool match yesterday. The halftime 7-0 scoresignalled game over. Krystal Forgesson scored four goals from open play while field goals also went to Petrea Webster, Kayla Whitelock, Anita Punt, Emily Naylor, Katie Glynn (2) and Rose Keddell. Punt, Glynn and Sophie Cocks also dispatched penalty corners.
