Car trouble

- Derek Upton Christchurch

I have just returned from a trip to the United Kingdom and struck a rather odd situation with a rental car company.

I had booked online and paid a booking fee but when I went to pick the car up I was staggered to be asked for ‘‘proof of my residential address in the form of a utility bill, rates demand or phone bill’’. Now I don’t know about you but these are not the usual items I carry about my person and it seems ours is one of the countries that doesn’t have a home address on our licence. Fortunately I had an English friend with me and we booked the car out to him and made me second driver. Without him I would have been in the same state as the guy from Zimbabwe who arrived at the same time by taxi and he’d paid in advance. I suggest it would be an idea to put out a warning on this subject.
