George Harrison: Living In The Material World,
I know it’s also the name of his 1973 solo album, but that title conjures alarming images of Harrison, drunk as Christmas, belting out a Madonna cover in a karaoke bar. However, what we have here is an epic 31⁄ 2- hour film on the life and times of the most private and spiritually curious Beatle. Harrison sometimes seemed a fairly melancholy soul, but such a view is repeatedly challenged in this affectionate and respectful doco by major-league Beatles fan, Martin Scorsese. Obsessive gardener, religious seeker, underrated guitar hero, playful pothead, working-class millionaire, frustrated songwriter in a band with two better ones – Harrison is revealed to be a very complex proposition, but most of all a man who found in music his greatest joy, even while his guitar gently wept.
