5 things to do on Otago Peninsula
1. Visit Taiaroa Head
This birdwatcher’s paradise is on the tip of the peninsula, home to the only mainland colony of albatross in the Southern Hemisphere. Tour the observatory to see the birds in their natural habitat.
2. Discover a haunted castle
Commissioned by local politician William Larnach in the 1870s as a grand residence for his family, beautiful Larnach Castle has come to be associated with tragedy – his daughter, first wife and second wife died of illnesses, and then Larnach himself. Their ghosts are said to haunt the castle.
3. Explore Sandfly Bay
It might sound unappealing, but this beach actually got its name from sand flying in the wind – not the bitey insects. Take a boogie board and slide down the dunes, but watch out for sea lions or a yellow-eyed penguins.
4. Take a romantic stroll
Otago Peninsula was once rated by CNN as one of the most romantic regions in the world. Take a walk to the aptly-named Lovers Leap viewing platform, where intertwined basalt columns kiss at 224 metres above the sea.
5. Stay in Portobello
The village of Portobello is the perfect base for exploring the peninsula. Dine at the 1908 Cafe, or head to Portobello Hotel & Bistro, a classic pub since 1874.
