A home to live and love

Stylish villa conversions have become a city fringe speciality, but few could match 28 Woodside Rd for its celebration of light and space and sheer joy of living.

When the owners extended and renovated their Mt Eden home five years ago, they believed they were renovating ‘for keeps’, so they cut no corners in creating something special. From the immaculate gardens and outdoor living spaces designed by a leading Auckland landscape architect, to the spectacular kitchen and indoor living spaces, the end result leaves visitors open-mouthed in admiration. From inside the gate, the home and grounds look the very model of order and elegance. Then, stepping inside from the classic filligreed verandah you sense that something else is at play. Natural light fills the hall and every room, space and corner. Splashes of colour contrast dramatically with the mostly white decor and rooms develop their own personalities. It’s a declaration of fun! The front rooms retain the traditional villa layout of bedrooms both sides of the central hallway – large rooms with high ceilings, front bays and double wardrobes with storage cupboards above. Each has been remodelled and decorated to meet the needs of a young family. Two of the bedrooms share a stylish semi-ensuite; another features a raised bunk bed creating extra floor space for toys and games. There’s a well-appointed family bathroom; and a fourth bedroom has been adapted as a rumpus ideal for dance, music or whatever the children’s interests are. An impressive start, yet the best is still to come. The major extensions have taken place in the living areas, which open out to magnificent spaces for dining and entertaining. ‘‘The best thing about the renovation has been the living area and kitchen,’’ confirms Catherine, ‘‘opening out on three sides to the outdoor spaces, the outdoor fireplace, spa, pool and grass area.’’ The kitchen offers generous work spaces and storage, a butler’s pantry and dominating central island. There’s a separate lounge for cosy evenings or separate entertaining; while the main open plan area features three sets of bifolds accessing the outdoors, including the ultimate designer swimming pool, spa and outdoor fireplace. Meanwhile the upstairs master suite is a separate adult zone comprising a beautiful bedroom and ensuite with walkin wardrobe and well-designed office. In summary: 360 square metres of superb modern living on a secure and private 997 square metres in the heart of Mt Eden.
