Lexus stays in comfort zone with new seat
Lexus has just revealed a new concept, but it’s not a car. Rather, it’s a revolutionary new car seat.
The company says the extremelooking seat is made from a ‘‘revolutionary fibre net construction that re-evaluates the principles of car seat occupancy’’.
It features a movable seat cushion and backrest, to allow the spine to stabilise the head more effectively.
In humans, the company says, the spine allows the pelvis and chest to rotate in opposite directions, stabilising the head.
In order to recreate this movement in the car seat, the seat cushion and backrest ‘‘move kinetically with occupant weight and external forces’’ to help counteract vehicle motion.
The ‘upholstery’ comprises a spider web-pattern net that the company claims is sufficiently flexible to closely fit body shape, dispersing the load to make it possible to sit comfortably for prolonged periods.
The seat has also been made slimmer, making the overall car lighter.
The concept seat is also environmentally friendly, with the threads at the backrest of the webpattern construction made from synthetic silk-like material instead of petroleum-derived product.
The main component of this material is protein, which is created through microbial fermentation, then spun and processed into a new material offering what Lexus says is ‘‘superior shock absorbance properties’’.
