Three weird cruises

-

If you choose a cruise which goes on open water, like the Atlantic Ocean, you can expect rougher seas. If you choose somewhere in the Mediterranean, it’s flat as a pancake.

Many people go on a cruise for the ship, they don’t go for the destination. But island hopping around beaches is pretty awesome. That’s why Caribbean cruises are probably the best ones.

You wake up in the morning, have something to eat, lie on the beach during the day, maybe do an activity. You get back on the ship, party at night, get up in the morning and do the whole thing again, in a different place.

Don’t forget to tip the staff. Living and working on the ship is quite demanding. You live in small, shared cabin arrangements and you work very long hours – days off are few and far between.

It’s an American-style customer service job that relys on tips. The cruises around Australia and New Zealand were notorious among staff. If you were given one of those cruises, you knew you weren’t going to make any money.

I’ve taken one cruise holiday, last year. It was mainly out of curiosity about what it would be like as a passenger. But I also wanted to chill out and take it easy for a week, lie in the sun and drink cocktails.

I had a great drinks package – $50 a day for all you can drink. You get your money back very fast.

Star Trek Cruise

Trekkies can live long and prosper on the first official Star Trek cruise, joining some of the franchise’s biggest names – including William Shatner, who is hosting the voyage. The roundtrip cruise from Miami to the Bahamas aboard the Norwegian Pearl includes Q&As with the actors, movie screenings and theme nights. Sold out for 2017, voyages available in 2018. startrekthecruise.com.

Cat lovers’ cruise

There’s just one problem with the Meow Meow Cruise – no cats are actually allowed on board. Instead, this cruise from Miami to the Caribbean is a chance for cat lovers to mingle and discuss their furry friends aboard the Carnival Victory. Passengers can even visit a cat shelter at one of the ports. The cruise October 23-27, 2017. meowmeowcruise.com.

Sex cruise

Described as ‘‘pure ecstasy at sea’’, the recent Desire Cruise is said to have been the first ever sex-themed cruise. The couples-only, clothing-optional cruise departed from Venice, stopping at ports in Croatia and Slovenia. The Azamara Quest boasts an adult playroom, private jacuzzi lounge, and no doubt guests were offered ‘‘provocative entertainment’’.
