Thinking about world’s end

Not many jobs see you making a list of things to do before you die,

- writes Shaun Bamber.

Actress Tori Anderson has been thinking about the end of the world a lot lately. It’s not because she’s dying, or because she knows something we don’t. No, her pondering of the imponderable is purely work-related.

Actually, that doesn’t sound much better – note to readers, if work is at the point where you’re making lists of what you want to do before you die, it could be time to look for a new job.

Anderson has been making such a list, but she already has a new job – one she says is ’’a dream come true’’.

After a decade or so of bit parts and supporting roles (Smallville, Rookie Blue, Reign), the 27-year-old Canadian has scored the lead role in a TV romcom about a woman who meets her perfect man – perfect apart from the fact he firmly believes the world will end in eight months and 12 days.

Played by Galavant actor Joshua Sasse, Xavier isn’t crazy – his foretold Armageddon involves a scientifically explained asteroid that somehow no one else has noticed – but this vision of doom has prompted him to formulate what he calls an ‘‘apocalyst’’, nicely setting up a series of jaunty escapades.

Along for the ride is Anderson’s character Evie, the straitlaced foil to Xavier’s carefree spontaneity. Evie can’t quite decide if this guy is for real or not, but finds herself unable to resist the lure of his less-ordinary life.

Anderson’s own ‘‘apocalyst’’ includes surfing in Bali, working at a wildlife animal safari and taking her niece on a hot-air balloon ride – but will she follow through on any of it?

‘‘Because of this show, I’ve started to think about the things I’ve been putting off in my life,’’ says Anderson. ‘‘I’ve realised time really is precious, and if you have an opportunity you should seize it.

‘‘So yes, I think I’ll be doing a lot of things. Hopefully it’ll be a fun ride.’’
