Take a big jump, end with a splash

-

For the past 14 years, tourists, locals and thrill seekers have jumped off the Auckland Harbour Bridge. Walking up the steep edge along the bridge will set your pulse racing and your palms sweating, but it’s well worth it in the end.

Where/what is it?

AJ Hackett’s Auckland Harbour Bridge bungy, in the heart of Auckland Harbour. It’s just five minutes from downtown Auckland at 105 Curran St Extension, Westhaven Marina, Herne Bay.

If you’re game enough to jump from the 40-metre-high platform, you can be dunked in the water, but if you prefer to stay dry that’s okay too.

Why go?

It’s the only bungy jump in Auckland and the view from the top is reason enough to give it a go. It’s also the only bungy where you can jump and touch the ocean.

If you’re keen to try out the other famous AJ Hackett jumps in New Zealand, this one is a good place to start. It isn’t as intimidating as the Nevis in Queenstown that sits at 134m.

Insider tip

Wear clothing that you’re comfortable getting wet in and covered footwear, preferably shoes with laces so they don’t fall off! If you don’t want to get wet, jump out rather than down.

It can be daunting leaning over the edge at that height, but try to focus on the view rather than the nerves.

Also, don’t forget to smile. A bunch of photos are taken while you’re jumping which you can pick up on the way out.

If you’re too scared to go alone, the bungy is equipped for tandem jumps too.

Or, if you’re just keen to watch from above, you can accompany your mate out to the Bungy Pod.

Don’t worry you won’t fall – you’ll be harnessed up to walk with the group.

On the way/near by

If you don’t want to jump, you can walk across the bridge as part of the AJ Hackett Auckland Bridge Climb – the only one of its kind in New Zealand.

Once you get to the top, don’t forget to look at the 360 degree views.

The climb takes about an hour and a half.

Why not triple the fun with a basejump by wire off the tallest man-made structure in New Zealand, Auckland’s Sky Tower?

To wind down from all that adventure, it’s well worth taking a drive to the North Shore to relax at some stunning beaches and celebrate the day with a few cold drinks at the local bars.

How much?

Adults can bungy for $160, children cost $130 and New Zealand students with a current student ID can jump for $130.
