Charming architecture, clogs, windmills, bikes, and an eclectic atmosphere, visitors to Amsterdam, in The Netherlands, can expect a lot of things from their holiday, but for an experience just that little bit extra special I can’t recommend enough visiting during spring time to see the tulips in full bloom.

One of the best places to see the tulips is at Keukenhof, one of the world’s most famous flower gardens.

In the town of Lisse, a short bus trip from Amsterdam, the park attracts around 800,000 visitors from around the world when it opens for just eight weeks in March to May to show off its seven million bulbs that are planted each year.

When I visited, I wandered around the park and then hired a bike from outside the gardens to explore the wider region on two wheels.

Bikes are relatively easy to hire, and there are four signposted routes ranging from 5km to 25km with maps available.

in the heart of the city, I also visited the famous floating flower markets, Blowmenmarkt.

The market is made up of rows of flower stalls on floating barges, and the many varieties and colours make for a very Instagram-worthy photograph.
