Inflight bar? Yes please

The perks flying Emirates business class leave feeling very content.

The service

Hard to fault. Whether you’re kicking things off with a glass of Champagne (as one does in business class) or want your photo taken with an instant camera in the lounge, you’ll want for nothing on this flight. And they’re very generous with the booze. One flight attendant seemed almost hurt when I refused a top-up on my pinot.

Feeding time

Emirates has invested a lot of time and money on its wine selection in recent years and it shows. I choose one of their exclusive vintages – a Cloudy Bay Te Wahi Pinot Noir 2013 from Central Otago. For this flight, the dinner options include prawns, beef or chicken. I go for the tamarind prawns, served in a tasty hot and sour sauce with turmeric rice and sauteed green beans, followed by a very decadent chocolate torte. It’s great to have proper dishes and cutlery. If you’re still feeling peckish, there’s always those snacks in the bar area.

The verdict

They had me at the in-flight bar. Seriously, how cool is that? Combined with other perks such as an express lane arrival card, access to the Emirates lounge and those cosy flatbed seats, there’s a lot to like about flying Emirates business class. Yes, it’s pricey forsuch a short flight, but well worth the splurge if you can swing it.
