Q. I like the idea of cycling around Vietnam. Would you recommend going it alone or taking a guided or self-guided tour? Which route is the most visually spectacular?

A. Vietnam is wonderful to explore by bike and both guided and self-guided options have their merits. I would recommend a guided cycling tour if it’s your first visit. You can’t go past the assistance of a local professional to help you navigate your way and in particular the hectic city traffic! It also offers you the safety net and comfort of a support vehicle so you can enjoy the experience.

There are a multitude of companies offering guided tours. A minimum of two weeks is standard for most cycle tours, but if you have time then a month is ideal to see both ends of the country.

I suggest starting in Ho Chi Minh then making your way north to Hanoi with the possibility of adding on the mountains of Sapa to finish off – this is a must-see spot.

Vietnam is an incredible country and regardless of which option you decide on you are going to have a fantastic time.
