Two dead in shooting

-

Two men are dead after a shooting in Whangarei.

Police were called to an address on McMillan Avenue in the suburb of Kamo at 1.13pm yesterday, and later revealed a person had died at the scene.

The second man was taken to hospital in a critical condition, but died from his injuries.

Autopsies would be carried out on both men, who were known to each other.

Police said they were in the ‘‘very early’’ stages of an investigation and did not believe there was any ongoing threat to the public.

They were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

They added the public ‘‘will continue to see police activity and cordons in place around the area’’.

Neighbours yesterday reported they had been forced to shelter in a nearby playcentre after police shut down the area following the incident.

One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said he was shocked by the shooting in what was usually a quiet street.

Kamo has already seen its fair share of shootings this year.

Five people were shot in February in a house which police confirmed was linked to gangs.
