Jon Snow best of Kiwis in Oz

- MAT KERMEEN

KIWI stars Bonneval and Jon Snow were overshadowed by Gailo Chop on Saturday but they will return to Caulfield in a bid for redemption on Saturday.

Bonneval, the race favourite, came home sixth place and Jon Snow held on for third yesterday’s Group I Caulfield Stakes.

Murray Baker, who trains in partnership with Andrew Forsman, gave the star duo a pass mark and said they will both return on Saturday for the A$3.1 million Group I Caulfield Cup (2400m).

‘‘Very happy with Jon Snow he went well, fought on well,’’ Baker said told Racing.com.

‘‘Bonneval, it was very hard for her to win from where she was, she changed ground, happy with the run,’’ Baker said.

Bonneval finished just four lengths behind Gailo Chop. Jon Snow was just over two and a half lengths behind the Darren Weir-trained Gailo Chop.

Bonneval went into the race with six consecutive victories but her wide draw made it tough.

Damian Lane predictably took Bonneval, the reigning New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Horse of the Year, to the back of the pack from her outside gate.

‘‘She ran super. told Racing.com.

‘‘I couldn’t win looping the field from there so I rode her for luck and I didn’t get much. She still hit the line well.’’

Stephen Baster was happy with the effort of Jon Snow leading into next week’s Caulfield Cup.

‘‘He ran really well. Had to do a little bit of work early and held on nice to the line so obviously, the 2400 (metres) will suit him.’’ The barrier killed her,’’ in in Lane
