Driver risks ‘carnage’

- Stuff

Police twice spiked the tyres of a man who led them on a prolonged pursuit and eventually had to use a Taser and a dog to subdue him when he was finally cornered.

The 29-year-old man received medical attention when he was caught after the hour-long chase near Christchurch yesterday.

Inspector Hirone Waretini said that during the afternoon police received many reports of a man passing on blind corners, overtaking on double-yellow lines, speeding and tail-gating in the Waikari area.

Police found the driver, but he failed to stop and led them towards Waipara on State Highway 1.

They successfully spiked his tyres, but he drove a further 8km before stopping near Amberly where he threatened a parked motorist with a baseball bat.

The motorist, a tourist in a rental car, fled and the man then stole the vehicle and continued his escape bid.

Police continued the pursuit and spiked the second car at Waikuku, north of Christchurch.

He drove a further 11km before the car came to rest at Tuahiwi, 25km from the city.

But the driver was not done there. Emerging from the car, he threatened police with the baseball bat.

He was Tasered, but it took a police dog to finally end the saga.

Waretini said the driver’s behaviour was ‘‘complete madness’’ and while it was fortunate no members of the public or police staff were injured, the offender could have caused ‘‘great carnage’’.

The man will appear in court tomorrow facing charges including aggravated robbery and assault with a weapon.

Meanwhile at least 12 people were injured in a three-car crash on State Highway 33 in the Bay of Plenty last night.

The crash, at Paengaroa, occurred about 9.45pm.

One person has serious injuries, and the other occupants suffered injuries ranging from moderate to minor.
