It’s tempting to while away your stay in California’s Santa Barbara lazing on the white sand beaches seemingly stretching to eternity in both directions or enjoying the world-class wines at the many vineyards.

But try doing as the locals do and squeeze in at least one tramp in the Santa Ynez mountains that form the backdrop to the chic, Mediterranean style city.

One of the best, and most accessible, is the 5.6 kilometre round-trip to wellnamed Inspiration Point in chapparelcovered Mission Canyon.

Taking about two hours, the wellmaintained trail winds slowly but surely through the Hollywood Western-esque landscape to a summit providing panoramic views of the city, the glittering Pacific Ocean beyond and monolithic Cathedral Peak.

It’s particularly incredible in the late afternoon, when all is bathed in a flattering golden glow.

Reward yourself with a drink on the rooftop deck of the Deep Sea Tasting Room on ever-busy Stern’s Wharf.

Home of Conway Family Wines, the urban winery also offers other varietals, by the glass or bottle, as well as tastings.

Watching the sun set over pristine West Beach, possibly catching glimpses of the dolphins and whales lucky enough to call the place home, you’ll feel like you’re living your own California dream.
