Insider tip
You can’t miss the giant kauri log: it’s nine metres around and dates from that original forest – though that’s a baby considering that the kauri species has been around for 220 million years.
You’d need to be lucky to spot any wild geckos, though; but you’ll find some of these bright green Northland specialties in the Gecko House. Any questions, ask park owner John Johnston: he’s full of information and enthusiasm.
On the way/nearby
Head east along SH10 for Carrington Resort’s golf course and winery (something else those Dallies had a hand in).
Further along, stop off at Matthews Vintage Collection to explore their lovingly restored collection of old cars and farm machinery. There’s domestic stuff too: defunct floor polishers, mobile phones, typewriters, saucepans and soda siphons, and a pair of flourbag bloomers. Lyn might play the pianola for you. Then press on to Mangonui’s famous fish and chip shop perched over the waves.
How much?
Admission charges are adults $12.50, children 8-16 $6, family $30. The park is open 9am-5pm every day except Christmas Day.
Best time to go
Sunshine makes the bush walk beautiful; rain gives an authentic experience of the gumdigger’s life. So, any time is good. – Pamela Wade
