Q. We’re hoping to take a family holiday in Hawaii next year. Where are we best to base ourselves to get an authentic Hawaiian experience but also have plenty of things to do?

A. Hawaii comprises six very different islands, each offering a different holiday style.

For a stay of less than a week, I would recommend basing yourself on the island of Oahu in the popular spot of Waikiki. Oahu offers a huge range of activities. Make the most of the amazing beaches by scuba diving, snorkelling or paddle boarding. It’s easy to hire a car and get around Oahu – a drive to the North Shore shouldn’t be missed. The North Shore food trucks have some of the best seafood in Hawaii.

If you have more time then I suggest heading to the island of Maui. It has some of the world’s best beaches with water activities including the Atlantis Submarine – a fun trip down to see the underwater world.

Big Island has vast landscapes and off-the-beaten-track experiences. The island features delicious coffee plantations, spectacular waterfalls and one of the world’s most active volcanoes.
