The Cook Islands: What a dream! Before I ventured off to laze away my afternoons on the sandy stretches of beach that epitomise the Cook Islands, I’d pictured nothing more than idle days poolside sipping cocktails. I did this, but I also discovered another side to the Cook Islands, one filled with jungle adventures and adrenaline-pumping water sports.

First up was a quad bike adventure in Rarotonga. I spent two hours venturing through muddy and rocky terrain, crossing streams, and swimming in fresh water creeks. To finish it off, I enjoyed a fresh fish burger from the famous Mooring Fish Cafe.

Next was Rongohiva Watersports’ speed boat. Built for maximum speed and fun, the rig had me darting atop the waves and racing along Rarotonga’s shoreline. Not one for the faint-hearted.

Lastly, a 45-minute flight from Rarotonga whisked me off to the paradise that is Aitutaki. A true wonder of the Pacific, I would have been happy to laze away the afternoons watching the waves lap against the shore but adventure awaited.

I spent the day with The Vaka Cruise, snorkelling among giant clams and being entertained by our hilarious tour guide who shared tales about the history of the land. The delicious buffet lunch topped it perfectly.
