Tourists are flocking to the north of Kaiko¯ura to see what could be New Zealand’s newest ‘‘lake’’.

Before 2016’s 7.8-magnitude earthquake, the Hapuku River was seldom visited by tourists or locals.

That all changed after a 150-metre landslide plunged into the river, creating a 400m-long lake, which now draws tourists daily.

Access to the lake is by foot or by helicopter and Daniel Stevenson, chief executive of South Pacific Helicopters, said it has quickly become a drawcard.

‘‘We’re just trying to showcase the different areas of Kaiko¯ura. It [the lake] is a great sight-seeing spot.’’
