Grammys snub for Lorde despite nomination

-

Kiwi singer Lorde might be in the running for a top award at tomorrow’s 60th Annual Grammy Awards, but she will not be performing at the event.

Her second album Melodrama was nominated for album of the year against Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN, Childish Gambino, ’Awaken, My Love!, Jay-Z, ’4:44’, and Bruno Mars’ ’24K Magic’.

But in a tweet from New York, where the awards will be held, Lorde’s mother, Sonja Yelich, tweeted a picture of a New York Times article, with the caption ‘‘this says it all’’.

This paragraph was circled ‘‘Of the 899 people to be nominated for Grammy awards in the past six years, only 9 per cent were women. (This year Lorde is the only woman to be nominated for album of the year: she is not scheduled to perform.)’’

CBS, the network that owns the awards show, did not respond to questions about the artist not performing.

The American entertainment awards season has been dominated by the #TimesUp movement.

Artists at the expected to be roses as a nod to Grammys are wearing white it.

White was chosen symbolically, suffragettes wore white during protests, and Hillary Clinton wore white at Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration.

Hollywood superstars including Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, Meryl Streep and Shonda Rimes started #TimesUp following the Harvey Weinstein sex scandal to combat assault, harassment and inequality in the workplace.
