’’The Wanaka Tree’’ has been damaged by climbers and could die if people don’t leave it alone.

-

Lake Wanaka Tourism will design a ‘‘no climbing on the tree’’ sign after noticing damage to the iconic tree. Queenstown Lakes arborist Tim Errington said the thinbarked willow had lost a limb and was being wounded by climbers. ‘‘As long as people don’t clamber all over it, it should go on. It gets open wounds and they are entry points for infection.’’ The tree is regarded as one the most photographed in the world.
