4. Mrs Warren’s Profession (George Bernard Shaw, 1893)

Mrs Warren’s profession was the oldest one of all and that, in the late19th century, was a particularly daring topic to be explored in the theatre. It was banned for a time in Britain, and a police raid on a 1905 New York production ended with the arrest of the theatre manager.
