Safer With the Wolves... (Southbound)

★★★1⁄2

Unless you’re a devoted Dandy Warhols fan it’s unlikely you’ve come across Pete International Airport, the psychedelic, part-time side project of Warhols’ guitarist Peter Holmstro¨m. Side projects can be a mixed bag: occasionally wonderful, frequently self-indulgent. But Safer With the Wolves... is solid, a pleasant collection of trance-like psychedelia with the odd killer hook. It’ll come as no surprise to anyone who listens that Holmstro¨m traces his music back to Dark Side of the Moon, for this is one trippy album. Tracks wind ahead, with instruments popping in and out and guitars subtly squealing in the background. There’s even a sitar on offer. Standouts include Senorita, with its catchy chorus, and lovely, melancholy opener Even Happier. Not a major release by any means but an enjoyable listen nonetheless. – Jack Barlow
