Euthanasia polling

-

Dianne Cooper (Letters, October 7) laments the lack of pro-euthanasia submissions in the face of the large majority against the bill. At the same time, however, she rejoices in the apparent support shown in opinion polls.

I believe this discrepancy usefully

exposes a serious weakness in the promoters’ claim to have majority support for this bill.

The most obvious lesson we can take from it is the contrast between a person’s kneejerk reaction to a leading poll question as compared to their considered view after reading the evidence and reflecting on it.

The overwhelming opposition to the Seymour bill, as evident from the vast majority of submissions to the justice select committee, speaks volumes.
