Alice in Chains

- – Hugh Collins

Rainier Fog (Universal) ★★★ The Seattle overlords unsurprisingly follow an ‘‘if it ain’t broke’’ philosophy on their sixth studio record. Rainier Fog sits well into the mould of classic Alice in Chains – sludgy riffs, blues-metal leads and soaring vocals work together in an approach longtime fans should be more than comfortable with. Joining the band in 2006, frontman William DuVall has always been eerily reminiscent of original singer Layne Staley. Duvall is certainly powerful, even if he doesn’t have the same dark and angsty edge Staley was known for. The former punk guitarist has the ability to finely blend his melodies with the guitars – he complements axeman Jerry Cantrell. Fog sees Cantrell follow his classic metallic approach, a muscular feel that has inspired scores of rock and metal guitarists. However, while the classic feel is there, you’ll yearn for the grittier strength of 1990’s Facelift or 1992’s Dirt. But it’s hard to criticise a band that, at 30 years plus, has yet to make an attempt at diluting its seminal sound.
