Party’s over for Google

Sunday Star-Times - - WORLD -

Google is cutting down on ‘‘excessive alcohol’’ at work parties and events as it tries to address a wave of sexual harassment claims. After staff worldwide staged a walkout last week to protest the web giant’s handling of cases of sexual misconduct, chief executive Sundar Pichai has released a list of policies the company will follow. Alongside plans to make it easier for claims to be reported and dealt with, Pichai has taken a strong stance on drinking, saying: ‘‘Harassment is never acceptable, and alcohol is never an excuse.’’ He said that in 20 per cent of the cases that had been brought involving harassment, the perpetrator had been drinking.
