Welcome Matt Day, you’re here to stay

November 29 began like any other, a bowl of weet-bix and two slices of peanut butter toast. But, it was different.

The most important day on the calendar for men named Matt (or, for that matter, Mat, Mattew and Matteus, and women named Matilda) had finally arrived.

International Matt Day, a day invented simply because . . . has slowly gained traction since I launched the concept earlier this month. And it’s something to be celebrated more so than Christmas. Let me tell you why.

1. Matts actually exist.

2. No rampant consumerism (but please buy a Matt Day t-shirt from my website).

3. No stress. People get worked up over Christmas, this is simply not true for Matt Day.

4. You don’t have to see family. Just say ‘‘happy Matt day’’ to someone, that’s it really.

5. No difficult wrapping paper. A chore that I also happen to be terrible at.

The news of International Matt Day was met with praise from the online community of people whose names are Matt.

And so, buoyed by the enthusiasm, I redoubled my efforts to contact celebrity Matts with the hope they could propel the day into the cultural zeitgeist.

Unfortunately, Matt McConaughey’s publicist said filming commitments in the UK kept him too busy for the international celebration, Matt LeBlanc was on holiday and I didn’t even hear back from Matt Damon’s publicist.

Not one to be disheartened by small setbacks, I took it upon myself to spread the Matt Day joy.

On Thursday I took to the streets delivering the gift of beer on a hot Spring day. (Disclaimer: Moa is in no way affiliated with International Matt Day.) Coffee cart barista Matt Wright told me Matt Day was ‘‘amazing’’ as I passed him a cold Moa.

Visio Creative Studio founder Matt Squire was delighted with his Matt Day gift, and The Plant owner Matthew Hellriegel could hardly believe his luck.

I have high hopes that next year, International Matt Day will reach even higher heights.
