Detention camp closes

-

The non-profit running what once was the largest US detention camp housing migrant teenagers says the last children left the facility yesterday. The tent city in Tornillo, Texas was shutting down, and all equipment would be removed by the end of January, said Krista Piferrer, spokeswoman for BCFS Health and Human Services. The facility, with capacity for 360 children, opened in June in an isolated pocket of the Texas desert. It expanded into a guarded detention camp that held more than 2700 largely Central American teens – more people than were detained in all but one of the nation’s 204 federal prisons.
