Capaldi is someone to love Lewis Capaldi

- Kate Robertson kate.robertson@stuff.co.nz

Bear with me while I drop one of the most unoriginal lines in the music journalist hype game. Lewis Capaldi is a name you’re about to hear a lot more of. Honestly. The hardest part of being a 20-something singer/songwriter producing dreamy love songs is breaking through the noise, and proving why your voice should be heard.

Capaldi, 22, is currently occupying the No 1 spot on the British charts with his pour-yourheart-out ballad Someone You Loved. He’s halfway there.

With an album due out on May 24, fans can expect the swoon-worthy singles to keep coming.

Jumping from a single to an EP,

Freya Ridings’ newly released You Mean The World To Me EP is well worth 20 minutes of your time.

Her music is soulful, emotional and incredibly graceful.

Think Paloma Faith, think Emeli Sande, think Jessie Ware.

Gentle keys, slowly building percussion and booming vocals.

The EP’s title track is particularly stirring, leaving you with no choice but to listen to the other four songs.

Game of Thrones fans will find joy in Ridings’ video for the song, too, which stars Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) and was directed by Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister).

Last up, if you fancy tuning your eyes and ears to something wonderful this weekend, Liekeli47’s NPR Tiny Desk concert has landed on YouTube.

In the clip, the American singer/rapper performs a handful of songs from her critically acclaimed 2018 album Acrylic.

The ease with which she spins her smart, witty and sometimes heartbreaking lyrics is awe inspiring.

She crosses genres, is a master in musical arrangements and a captivating storyteller.

The album is rooted in womanhood, her lived experiences as a black woman in New York, violence and vulnerability.

The hardest part of being a 20-something singer/songwriter producing dreamy love songs . . . and proving why your voice should be heard.
