Sunday Star-Times

Netflix favourites in their own voices

If 2019 was the year that podcasts were made into TV shows, then 2020 looks set for the year that TV comes to podcasts. Not only can you hear your favourite TV stars talk about their TV shows, but you can also catch TV stars acting in polished fiction podcasts.

The latest actors to make the transition to podcast fiction are Josh Gad (Frozen, Book of Mormon) and Gillian Jacobs (Community) in the new fiction podcast Blood Ties.

Gad and Jacobs play siblings Michael and Eleonore Richland, who come together when their parents die in a private plane crash. Their father is a world-renowned cardiologist and, once dead, rumours about his professional conduct are revealed by a New York Times journalist. The series is scripted true crime, with undertones of Succession mixed in with #Metoo era issues of consequence and accountability.

Also coming from TV to podcast is the companion podcast of award winning series The Crown. The third season features Olivia Colman as the Queen and Helena Bonham-Carter as Princess Margaret. The podcast series of the same name is produced by Netflix and hosted by BBC radio presenter Edith Bowman.

Each episode features behind-thescenes information and interviews with some of the cast and crew. All the episodes are out now and it’s a perfect way to extend your night-time bingeing by listening to the podcast in the daytime.

Another Netflix favourite getting the podcast treatment is teen rom-com The Kissing Booth. The sequel Kissing Booth-Going the Distance, which again features Joey King as Elle, Jacob Elordi as Noah and Joel Courtney as Lee, is coming to Netflix in June.

Spotify is making a prequel podcast featuring the cast, called The Kissing Booth-Elle’s Diary. It’s set to be a hit with the teens and a great way to extend the show’s reach.
