People hate it. They moan about it. They sometimes wish it didn’t exist. They are drowning in it, but they bloody love it.

I’ve got to say that social media has really shown us his good side these past few weeks.

Before coronavirus it was still that place where trolls would kill time by killing your buzz.

Your crazy aunty would post conspiracy theories and tag you in them.

Baby photos, food photos, reality TV scandals, viral fads and endless funny cat videos. That was social media.

April 2020. New Zealanders are locked inside. Itching for something new to do.

So in true Kiwi fashion we grabbed a piece of number 8 wire, no, not the literal piece our forefathers used to shape this fine land. I’m talking about the 21st century version. Our mobile phones.

This golden age number 8 piece of wire gives us the power to do anything, be anyone, make anything!

We can connect with anyone on the planet. Check in on loved ones, order groceries online, never have to use our brains again thanks to Dr Google!

Apart from letting the problemsolving parts of the brain get dusty, this internet thing does something even better.

It provides hours and hours of endless, wireless, effortless entertainment.

Joseph Parker has been lifting spirits with a variety of dances and I’ve been doing my hardest to give people a chuckle through my platforms. Or my ‘‘sosh media’’ for the cool kids.

The internet comes in all shapes and sizes: the good – quite a small part, the bad – quite large, and the ugly – that’s everywhere.

But right now, I think if you take a look around your social media world, the good is doing a bloody awesome job of shining through.

It’s connecting us, keeping our spirits up, helping us keep active, inspiring us to try new things, and of course, with the right filter and a high enough selfie angle – helping our cheekbone definition. So, here’s to you lockdown social media.

Apart from letting the problemsolving parts of the brain get dusty, this internet thing does something even better. It provides hours and hours of endless, wireless, effortless entertainment.
