Glacier Heli Hike tours are operated by The Helicopter Line, with guiding services by Franz Josef Glacier Guides, which is part of Nga¯i Tahu Tourism. Two-hour tours cost $485 for adults, $455 for children (minimum age 8 years), which includes all gear and scenic flights from base to the ice.

Full-day Glacier Heli Ice Climb tours operated by Franz Josef Glacier Guides cost $620, including all safety gear and instructio­n, with a minimum age of 16.

Entry to the Glacier Hot Pools is $29 for adults, and $25 for children, with under-5s free. The pools are open from Friday to Monday, 2pm to 8.30pm.

Getting there:

Franz Josef is about five hours from Christchur­ch, or two hours south of Hokitika Airport. It’s a good idea to give yourself a few days in town in case the changeable weather means you need to reschedule your glacier tour.
