ED’S NOTE

- Trupti Biradar Travel Editor

Maybe it’s because I was born in the middle of a howling blizzard in what was then West Germany, or maybe it’s because I spent my formative years living in the sweltering, desert country of Saudi Arabia, but winter is my favourite season. Provided of course that I’m indoors, fluffy socks on, hot chocolate with extra marshmallows in hand, in front of a roaring fire.

While it’s no secret that our majestic mountains offer incredible adventures for intrepid skiers, snowboarders and other adrenaline-seeking types, we’re also so lucky that New Zealand does cosy winters well. We have some of the best hot springs overlooking our lush landscapes, warming cuisines from across the globe, snug pubs to savour a mulled wine or hot toddy, and some of the clearest skies in the world for stargazers.

Even though our borders are finally open and a holiday across the ditch is possible, we know many of you will elect to stay in Aotearoa for now. And for you we offer inspiration on the many wonderful things there are to do here during the colder months. In our cover story, our travel team has uncovered an incredible 100 ways to experience winter – from world-class events like Luma in Queenstown and Hawke’s Bay’s FAWC to fun activities like snow-shoeing or yoonering, all while staying in stunning winter accommodation. Whatever your travel style, we have got you covered.

Finally, a shout out to the lovely folks at Hawke’s Bay Tourism for supporting us. Flip this magazine upside down for some inspo for your next holiday in the Bay.

Happy travels,
