hen you know people in your community are struggling but you’re not

uite sure how to help adding an e tra ar of peanut butter a few bags of pasta and some rolled oats into your shopping trolley is a sure-fire way to make a difference.

hat’s what iwis are encouraged to do as part of ew orld’s annual amily family oodbank Appeal that begins on onday une th and runs for two weeks.

ustomers are invited to help another local family by filling a bag with foodbankfriendly products or purchasing a pre-filled bag) and leaving it at the store for ew orld to deliver to the ity ission or local foodbank who will all also receive a share of a donation from ew orld.

ellington ity issioner urray dridge says part of the ission’s role is to connect people in the community who have resources with those who don’t.

amily family is an ideal opportunity for people to help people in their community who are struggling. By filling up or purchasing a bag of foodbank-friendly groceries at ew orld they are really helping to make a difference in their own community ” he says.

e all know how hard the last couple of years have been for everybody but for those who are doing it tough it’s an even more difficult road.”

dridge says the ongoing conse uences of the ovidpandemic has increased the number of ew ealanders consistently living with food insecurity. aced with ob losses or reduced hours food becomes a discretionary item when the bills continue to grow.

ife becomes pretty miserable when you are constantly worried about how you are going to pay the bills how you are going to feed the kids and where the ne t bit of money is coming from.”

e are seeing a lot of families who are right on the cusp. hey are ust managing to get by but it doesn’t take much to push them over the edge and into a space where they don’t have sufficient resources. t might be a medical e pense or it might be something going wrong with the car they rely on. hese are the things that happen in life and for most people they are an irritation. But because of their current circumstances they are uite catastrophic for a lot of our population.”

anaging irector of oodstuffs ew ealand teve Anderson says that because ew orld stores are owner operated they are in a uni ue position to directly support the communities they serve. ast year oodstuffs made four promises to be

ere for - with providing all ew ealanders with access to healthy affordable food and supporting local communities amongst their commitments. Anderson says ew orld’s amily family oodbank Appeal plays a significant role in delivering on these promises.

ur teams ity local foodbanks and our customers support amily family pulling out the stops so no ew ealander need go hungry in winter.

ogether we can make a big difference and ’d like to say a huge thank you to issions

Foods that keep and store well are foodback-friendly.

everyone who contributes to amily family this year it’s really appreciated.”

hen considering what people most need dridge says the ission concentrates on food with a high nutritional value and long shelf life. oods that keep and store well such as milk or powder canned goods pasta peanut butter and rolled oats are always welcome. ersonal hygiene products like soap toilet paper and sanitary pads are also on the list of foodbank-friendly items. e says it is never easy for people to ask for help to put food on their table.

dridge says support from the oodstuffs co-operatives whose brands include ew orld A ’n A our uare ilmours and rents has been hugely

important during a year that has seen demand for food parcels rise significantly. ocal owner operators and ew orld operational teams helped the ellington

ity ission create a social supermarket where people can choose the food that suits their needs and family while receiving support from ission team members. As well as amily family we’ve had an incredible amount of ongoing support from oodstuffs and our local

ew orld operators in the interim. t’s been a huge benefit for the people who need it.”

Family2family runs from 7-20 June. Fill a bag at New World to help local families in need.
