What’s one place you would take every visitor to New Zealand, and why?

Nelson. It’s my hometown so I know it intimately. It has the most wonderful and grounded people, plus there’s so much to experience and do, with lovely local boutiques, markets and art galleries, as well as amazing parks and beaches on its doorstep.

I definitely recommend the Abel Tasman National Park, which I’ve spent a lot of summers exploring, and walking up the Centre of New Zealand track.

What’s your secret backyard favourite spot?

Lake Tarawera. My husband’s family has had a lake house there for generations, so there’s always family and friends to catch up with.

It’s wonderfully peaceful, and there is so much to do in the area. As a family, we enjoy cycling, boating and fishing. There are some great walking trails, as well as hot springs in the area.

What’s your favourite place for a pie/coffee?

Ozone cafe in Auckland is a local favourite for breakfast or lunch. I love that the coffee is roasted on site, and can trace the beans’ origin.

And I’m particularly fond of the sweet treats at Prefab in Wellington.

What’s one New Zealand spot that’s at the top of your bucket list?

I haven’t done the Tongariro Alpine Crossing yet, but it’s on my bucket list. It’s a one-day trek past Mt Nga¯ uruhoe and over Mt Tongariro, and the views over the crater lakes sound absolutely amazing.

We are so lucky to have access to these local gems.
