‘Cheating’ widower loses
A Spanish widower who tried to dodge a stipulation in his wife’s will that he must not remarry after her death has lost the inheritance she left him. The man, named only as Constantino, had insisted that his long-term relationship with a woman he claimed was his cousin did not constitute marriage. But a provincial court in Galicia has decided that Constantino lived with the other woman for nearly three decades in a relationship comparable to a marriage. The legal battle dated back to a time in Spain when it was not uncommon for people to leave their wealth to their spouses on the condition that they not remarry. Constantino’s wife died in 1996 but had made her will in 1975. His wife’s sister brought a case against him, claiming he had not been faithful to the terms of the will.
