Q&A Richard Painter
Leftfield Wines winemaker.
Where is one place you would take every visitor to New Zealand, and why?
For me, Abel Tasman National Park is a must-visit. Beautiful golden sand beaches and coves, crystal-clear water and native bush.
There is also easy hiking and camping, sea kayaking, and water taxi access to various bays. It is a great place to experience the beautiful New Zealand outdoors.
What is your secret backyard favourite spot?
I love the beaches south of Cape Kidnappers in Hawke’s Bay.
Ocean Beach and Waima¯ rama are the well-known ones, but there are others, which I will keep secret.
What is your favourite place for a pie/coffee?
For coffee, Red Bridge Coffee in Tukituki Valley is the place to stop as you head out to the central Hawke’s Bay beaches. It is in a converted shipping container in a farm paddock with a rustic vibe, friendly staff and great coffee.
As for pies, whenever I am visiting wineries around Marlborough, visiting The Burleigh for a gourmet pie is a highlight. It is a bit of an institution in the wine community. The pork belly pie is my go-to.
What is one spot that is at the top of your bucket list?
Stewart Island. It is one of the few places in New Zealand I haven’t been to, but I have heard so many great things about it. Apart from the remoteness and natural beauty, the chance to see a kiwi in the wild is motivation enough.
