The events will hopefully leave a legacy and see a new generation of young women taking up sports they may not have participated in before, or generally become more active and improve their wellbeing.

ANZ is a long standing supporter of women’s sport in New Zealand and the Major Sponsor of the WHITE FERNS, so already know how many young girls and boys have been inspired by the team to take up cricket. Now ANZ want to share with you, who or what inspired the WHITE FERNS to strive to be at the top of their game and represent New Zealand at the crease.

LEA TAHUHU, BOWLER

“I’m inspired by the memory of my dad who coached me for a number of years. Now that he is no longer here, it’s really special to go out and represent him at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, with his name on my back.”

JESS KERR, BOWLER

“I guess it was [sister and fellow WHITE FERN] Melie who inspired me. We came from a cricketing family so I had no choice when it came to backyard cricket with the whānau. When I went and watched Melie at the last world cup it inspired me to work harder and reach higher honours. I haven’t looked back since.”

FRANKIE MACKAY, ALL ROUNDER

“At my primary school we always played cricket every lunchtime. I was lucky enough to have a teacher, who was a former cricketer herself. She mentioned to my parents that cricket was a sport I had a bit of talent for and that they should try and get me involved in a club. So I went along on a Friday night and it became my passion.”

AMY SATTERTHWAITE (VICE CAPTAIN), ALL ROUNDER

“Dad was the one who really inspired me to get into cricket and I fell in love with it. I was always following him around with a bat and ball in my hand and wanting someone to give me some throw downs. I remember one day [former BLACKCAPS star] Chris Harris got suckered into giving me throw downs on repeat for about half an hour. Sorry about that Chris, but it worked out OK.”

MELIE KERR, ALL ROUNDER

“My older sister [fellow WHITE FERN Jess Kerr] inspired me to get into cricket. As a kid I got dragged along to all of her games. I got bored of watching, so me and my friend Kate joined the local cricket club – the mighty Tawa – and the rest is history.”

ROSEMARY MAIR, BOWLER

“My cricketing inspiration came in the backyard playing with my three older brothers and my dad, who loved cricket. I became a bowler because I was bowling all day long and I could never get my brothers out.”
