Heavy rain red warning

for Coromandel Peninsula and Tairawhiti Gisborne north of Tolaga Bay. Red is the highest warning for severe weather. Other areas could be upgraded to red later in this event.

Orange warnings (issued for severe wind and heavy rain):

Auckland Emergency Management last night released a list of 24 shelters and civil defence centres, saying they will provide a place to be safe while the worst of the weather passes, but aren’t equipped for extended stays.

‘‘The centres will provide people with a place to eat, sleep and access essential support services.

‘‘People should still bring items for children and babies (formula, nappies and toys), medicines, photo identifica­tion and warm clothes.

‘‘Dogs are allowed at the centres and shelters but they must be on a leash or muzzled. Cats should be in a cage or carrier.’’

Northland, Auckland north of Whangapara­oa and including Great Barrier Island, Coromandel (wind), the rest of Tairawhiti Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay. In Auckland gusts likely to reach 120-130kph from Monday. The Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Taupo have all been upgraded to warnings as well.
